38-year-old Joann Vasquez, from North Texas, was apprehended and placed in the Dallas County Jail, on September 6. She is facing an indictment for stealing more than $400,000 worth of Bitcoin.
Court documents note that Dallas police responded to a residence in the 3800 block of Gaspar Drive, on January 25, 2021. Someone that had been watching the house had discovered a broken window and evidence of a burglary.
Surveillance cameras showed a man going into the backyard the previous day, around noon. He then exited a half an hour after that. He had been carrying a Roomba gun and a bag that was said to have had a safe inside.
The owner of the home told police that the missing safe had Bitcoin account details and passwords. That information had just been used to get into the accounts and transfer $470,000 of Bitcoin.
Michael Neria, the man seen entering the backyard, was arrested at WinStar Casino, in Oklahoma, on March 3, 2021. He is accused of being a part of close to 24 robberies with the assistance of others.
When questioned, he gave police information about the robberies, including the one on Gaspar Drive. He told them that Vasquez had the Bitcoin account details and most of the money and that she knew that the information was obtained illegally. To add, Neira was seen on a recording, using her Texas driver’s license to take money out of a Bitcoin ATM, following the burglary.
Between January 25, 2021 and February 1, 2021, Vasquez withdrew nearly $9,400 from Bitcoin ATM’s, on four separate occasions, authorities say.
They added that while in jail, Neira contacted Vasquez asking for funds from the Bitcoin account to his. A little while later, Neira received the funds.
Authorities were able to get $100,000 back from Neira, but they don’t know what happened to the almost $470,000.
Vasquez is thought to be the holder of the account that can manage the rest of the funds.
