A staff member at a residential therapeutic school for youths and young adults in Swansea, Massachusetts, died Wednesday night after being assaulted by a 14-year-old student.
Amy Morrell, 53, of Riverside, Rhode Island, was attempting to restrain the student at Meadowridge Academy when she was kicked in the chest just before 7 p.m. The student was allegedly trying to leave a dormitory without permission.
Morrell collapsed, and staff members immediately initiated CPR and called 911. Emergency services transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.
The juvenile has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and was arraigned in Fall River Juvenile Court on Thursday morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
