A 17-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the killing of a college basketball player who was shot dead at a pool party.
Deputies responded to an incident last week in east Camp County, where they found Jamarion Brown, 23, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Two other individuals were also injured by gunfire and taken to nearby hospitals; their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
According to reports, Brown, a student at Henderson State University in Arkansas, was attending a pool party in Texas when he was shot in the head.
Officials have not disclosed many details about the shooting but confirmed that the investigation remains active.
On May 28, law enforcement arrested 17-year-old Onterrian Jamour Newton from Mount Pleasant. He was booked into Camp County jail on a murder charge and is being held without bond.
Henderson State University released a statement on Brown’s death.
“It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown,” the statement reads. “‘Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound.”
