17-year-old Cedric Lofton, of Wichita, Kansas, died on September 26 at a Sedgwick County juvenile jail.
Lofton had been apprehended after fleeing his foster home, returning, and then acting strangely and aggressively with his foster family.
The officers felt that the young man was paranoid and suggested that he get mental treatment. But, they arrested him on suspicion of battery after he got violent with them.
After being placed in a cell for 90 minutes, Lofton became combative at the time of booking. He struck a worker in the head. Officers then put handcuffs on him, placed him face down on the floor, and sat on him for over 20 minutes.
Lofton settled down, went to sleep, and even snored a little. However, a little while later, his heart stopped beating. 911 was then called.
Lofton was given life-saving measures but died two days later.
His death has now been ruled a ‘homicide.’
The family’s attorney is outraged that the prone position was used to restrain Lofton, noting the George Floyd trial. It was then highlighted that this type of restraint method could cause breathing problems or affect the supply of oxygen to the brain and heart.
The employees involved have been put on administrative leave, and the investigation is ongoing.
