Dallas Grandmother Set To Stand Trial For The Death of Her 1 Month Old Grandson

A jury is being selected for the trial of a Dallas grandmother accused of killing her grandchild back in 2022.

63 year old Susette James is facing capital murder charges after she was acting as sole caregiver for her daughters children while she was in the hospital.

On October 22, 2022, around 1 a.m., officers responded to a call on the 8900 block of Vantage Point Drive regarding an unresponsive child. Upon arriving the child was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

James told authorities that everything was normal that day and she put 1 month old Zyholn Phillips down for bed around 6 p.m. and was checking on him periodically. She said around 1 a.m. she noticed him unresponsive and FaceTimed her daughter and a nurse at the hospital told her how to perform cpr.

An autopsy was performed and showed that Phillips suffered severe head trauma and ruled his cause of death a homicide.

If found guilty James could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
