As businesses are reopening in Texas, the driver license centers have yet to open. For those like Angela Wrighter, it is a frustrating wait, She had been stoped in, Dallas, trying to get her nephew ID renewed.
She stated, “I understand why they are doing what they are doing for the protection, because of the Coronavirus, but also, you know, people need their identifications.”
Many also stopped by to see if the office had opened.
Before the pandemic had begun there had already been lines at the offices in North Texas, and now it is estimated that there will be even more when they do open back up for operations.
NBC 5 had reached out to the DPS and a spokesperson. there was no set date for reopening, and that they are working with the governor’s office to open the departments up safely.
To keep the lines from becoming to long, a new guideline has been put in place for when they do open their doors.
The agency Spokesperson had stated that “When DL offices do reopen, Texans will notice some changes A new appointment solution, which has been in the works for several months now, will now launch. The appointment solution will allow customers to go online to book actual appointments at DL offices up to six months in advance. We are confident this will reduce the number of people who spend time waiting in line, as it will give them the ability to make an appointment and come into the office on a specific day and time. This means appointments will be required for all services, whether it is for a first-time DL or identification card, a renewal o address change. For customers who do not have an appointment, DL staff will be able to help them schedule an appointment at another time, date, or location.”
DPS now says that the majority of those who came into the offices don’t have to. now they just need to call 1-866-DL-RENEW (1-866-357-3639) or visit there website. Texans also do not have to worry about licenses expired after March 13, 2020 because the expiration date has been extended. DPS has stated that once the extensions have been lifted, Texans will have sixty-days to renew it. Renewals for ID cards are done similarly.
If a person has a learner’s permit, the process is done differently.
