Joeisha Cofer is a female corrections officer, employed at a St. Louis Justice Center. Anthony Chatman is an inmate inside the facility.
On Thursday, close to 12 p.m., Cofer was taken into custody only a few floors from where she was monitoring jail cells. She was then put in a jail cell with criminal charges pending.
Later, Cofer was charged with Delivery or Possession of a Controlled Substance at County/Private Jail/Correctional Center. She is facing charges for 2nd degree Trafficking Drugs, as well.
At the same time, Chatman was charged with the same offenses.
Reports indicate that the officer brought contraband, some including drugs and suspected fentanyl, into the jail. Lab tests were performed to confirm the substances.
The corrections commissioner said that an investigation had begun many months ago in a facility. It ended in the apprehension of a correctional officer.
Although Chatman shouldn’t have had a cell phone, text messages from October 23, 2021, revealed that Cofer brought him fentanyl inside of the Medium Security Institution.
Camera recordings also captured Cofer communicating with someone inside of a vehicle in the parking lot of the facility. She was then seen carrying many items to Chatman’s jail cell.
On November 18, 2021, authorities searched his jail cell and discovered 33 fentanyl pills. This came after two inmates had suffered nonfatal overdoses.
Authorities say that Cofer admitted to providing the fentanyl to Chatman on at least two occasions.
She is being held without bond.
