A man has been apprehended after being accused of fatally hitting a bicyclist and then fleeing the scene on May 21, close to 6 a.m.
Authorities say that Fernando Ramos, 39, was driving a Chevrolet truck when he ran into George Cooper, 60, as he was riding a bike. The victim was then dragged and run over. The incident occurred on Jackrabbit Trail and Beloat Road, in Buckeye, Arizona.
Cooper was discovered deceased on the side of the street after Ramos didn’t stop to assist him.
Ramos was taken into custody about nine miles from where the incident happened. Smoke was observed coming from his truck, as well as, damage to the front of the vehicle. He disclosed to officers that he didn’t see Cooper at first. He then began to worry and had called his wife several times.
Although Ramos was not impaired, he was traveling about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, authorities say.
Documents note that Ramos has a history of apprehensions and has been jailed for DUIs before.
He is facing charges of manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death or injury.
