Joel Torres, from McKinney, is said to have shot and killed his wife on Sunday afternoon. However, Torres said that he did not shoot her on purpose.
A little after 1 p.m., Torres contacted authorities, informing them that he shot his wife, Shailene Velez, unintentionally. The incident occurred at their home in the 4600 block of Kingsway Lane.
Velez succumbed to her injuries in the home prior to emergency crews arriving.
Torres disclosed to officials that he was attempting to “clear” his gun out when the tragedy transpired.
After looking into the matter further, detectives decided to place him in custody.
Torres was transported to the Collin County Jail with a bond of $200,000.
