A Mesquite police officer was fatally shot outside an Albertsons grocery store Friday afternoon.
Officers responded to a disturbance call on the 1500 block of S. Belt Line Road around 1:40pm.
Upon arrival the suspect produced a handgun and opened fire. A 21 year veteran was struck twice during gunfire exchange and the suspect shot once.
Both the officer and suspect were transported to Baylor Center University Hospital of Dallas in critical condition.
The officer later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect is still being treated.
