A woman died and two children were seriously hurt when their parasail hit a bridge in the Florida Keys. This came after the captain severed the line connecting them to the boat, authorities say.
The tragic incident happened, on Monday, close to 5:30 p.m. Supraja Alaparthi, 33, had been parasailing with her son Sriakshith Alaparthi, 10, and her nephew Vishant Sadda, 9.
An incident report was made by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It said the wind began to blow so fiercely that it caused the parasail to peg. Then the parasail was managed by the wind and not the captain. This caused the vessel to become unsafe.
“Under normal parasailing operations, it is the operation of the vessel. In particular, it is the speed of the vessel that creates the wind to lift the parasail into the air. The operator of the vessel controls the height of the parasail by increasing or decreasing the speed of the vessel. This enables the parasail operator to safely conduct and control parasailing operations,” the agency documented.
The captain, Daniel Couch, “cut the line tethered to three victims,” subsequent to the parasail being pegged,” reports note.
