Florida lawmakers passed a bill that would allow criminals who’re convicted of ‘sexual battery on children under 12’ to receive the death penalty.

The Senate officially passed the bill on Tuesday and it is being sent to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature.

Under the new legislation, the jury can recommend a death sentence once they reach at least 8-4 in favor of the penalty.

During an interview on Monday, DeSantis stated that Florida would be authorizing the death penalty for child rapists.

“My view is you have some of these people that will be serial rapists of six, seven-year-old kids. I think the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment when you have situations like that.” Governor DeSantis explained.
