Teenager Indicted For Murder Of Police Officer Says He Was Trying To Kill Himself

4.9kviews

Jason Banegas, 18, was indicted Thursday on a first-degree murder charge for shooting and killing a Hollywood, Florida police officer.

On October 17, authorities received a call about a male, on a bike, attempting to break into cars. Officer Yandy Chirino, 28, observed the teen and tried to apprehend him. Then, Banegas pulled out a stolen semi-automatic handgun.

Banegas told authorities that he was actually trying to kill himself to prevent having to go back to jail. However, he said that Chirino “kept moving around during the struggle,” and he pulled the trigger. The officer was struck in the face.

Another law enforcement official arrived on scene and suffered bruises while scrambling to get Banegas into handcuffs. Other officers aided Chirino as he was transported to a medical facility. He died from his injuries.

Banegas, who has had an arrest record since he was 12, was recently released from a juvenile detention center for selling cocaine.

  1. Thanks for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such fantastic information being shared freely out there.
