Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that local governments can now require businesses to mandate customers and employees to wear face masks while inside a business.
Hidalgo County takes effect Saturday and businesses could face up to $1000 fine for not complying and the order is to remain in place until further notice.
Bexar County which is near San Antonio will take effect Monday.
The orders also state that “no civil or criminal penalty will be imposed on individuals for failure to wear face mask in public because Abbott says he can not force people to wear mask in public but businesses can require face mask before entering their businesses.
Abbott says “We want to make sure individual liberty is not infringed upon by government and hence government cannot require individuals to wear masks.”
