A security guard is in stable condition after being shot in the head while he worked a football game.

Authorities in Utica, New York, stated that as a football game between Proctor High School and Binghamton High School was ending on Saturday, an altercation transpired in a school parking lot.

At least two security officers from the Utica City School District tried to stop the fight, close to 4 p.m. That’s when gunfire broke out, and one security officer was struck in the back of the head by a bullet.

The next day, the suspect, a 16-year-old student enrolled in an alternative education program, surrendered to authorities. He has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second and third degree, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal use of a firearm in the first degree.

An investigation is continuing.
