16-year-old Autumn Williams, a Chick-fil-A employee, has reported that she was forced to leave work before her shift was over. This was because it was said that her hair color was supposedly a violation of their dress guidelines.
“Hey, one of our supervisors came by and said that they noticed blonde in your hair, and he asked that you leave and come back when it’s taken out since it’s an unnatural color to you,” the manager was quoted as saying to her.
Williams had worked at the fast-food restaurant in Harrisburg, North Carolina, for three months. She now feels as though she was called out and was humiliated. Williams’ natural hair is actually blonde; however, her braid extensions are light brown.
Williams said that hair color was never talked about when she went through orientation, and the company’s handbook notes that hair and nails must simply adhere to health department regulations. It doesn’t mention anything about unnatural hair color.
Ultimately, Williams decided to quit her job, and she filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
She says that she is proud to have stayed true to herself and to have found employment elsewhere.
A Chik-fil-A rep noted that the policy was misinterpreted, and Williams is welcome to coming back to work there if she so desires.
