African Flamingo Missing For 17 Years Identified In Wild

In 2005, two flamingos escaped from a zoo during a storm. After 17 years, one pink flamingo, which is identified as No. 492 printed on its leg band, has been spotted among wildlife in Texas.

Texas Wildlife Officials identified this escaped flamingo through video footage on March 10th, 2022.

Both escaped flamingos were originally transferred to an American zoo in 2004 but employees in the American zoo had not yet clipped the wings of these flamingos. Without having their wings clipped, breaking out during the storm in 2005 didn’t present a challenge for both flamingos.

Furthermore, the flamingo who is No. 493 has not been reportedly spotted while No. 492 has been sighted in 3 states over a span of 17 years.

“There really isn’t an easy way to recapture the bird. It would only disturb wildlife where it has been found and possible cold do more damage to the birds than just leaving him alone,” states Christan Baumer, a spokesperson for the zoo in 2007.
