Apple must pay a man $1,081 for not providing a power adapter with his new iPhone, a Brazilian judge has ruled.
Judge Vanderlei Pinheiro stated that the incident is called a ‘tie sale”. This is when businesses make a customer purchase two products for one of them to function.
The judge stated that Apple had “obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture.” What’s more, it was called an “abusive and illegal commercial practice.”
Apple defended itself by saying that they provide USB-C Lightning cable with each iPhone. This allows customers to charge their phone by utilizing power adapters they can purchase from other businesses.
However, the judge opposed this notion, stating that the cable didn’t function with wall adapters without the USB-C port. This is needed because that is how the Apple charger was made.
Records also show that Apple stopped giving out the power adapter out of worries for the environment. It was also because of a decrease in supplies of accessories.
Apple was still making the power adapters and selling them separately.
In 2020, Apple had first said that they would stop giving power adapters with its iPhone 12. The Brazilian government thought that to be abusive. So, in 2021, Apple was fined $2 million. They added that the company didn’t prove the “environmental gain” that it had advertised.
