Tony Humphrey is a 16 year-old former baseball player at Iona Prep in New Rochelle, New York.
Humphrey, a junior, has already committed to play for Boston College after he graduates.
In order to stay in shape, he decided to join the school’s track team.
However, Humphrey stated that an assistant athletic director walked up to him last week and asked, “Why are you doing track?” He replied saying that he wanted to get faster.
“It never hurts to gain speed,” the administrator said, acknowledging that Humphrey was already fast, and he knew why. The teen said that the assistant AD stated that he “gained speed by running from the police.”
Humphrey said the comment was racist, and he went directly home to tell his mother. They then decided to take his gifts someplace else and transfer him to a public school.
Humphrey says he has complained about other racists things before, and nothing was done. On Tuesday, many students walked of class to show support for Humphrey.
The assistant AD has resigned.
