Brittney Griner Takes A Guilty Plea In Drug Smuggling Case

5.2kviews

Four months after Brittney Griner was detained at a Moscow-area airport, the WNBA star has pleaded guilty to drug smuggling charges in a Russian court.

“I’d like to plead guilty, your honor,” Griner told a judge on Thursday during a court hearing. “But, there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law,” she added. Griner is accused of possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her suitcase.

Griner could receive a 10-year prison sentence if she is found guilty of “large-scale transportation of drugs.” The cartridges contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil, which would equal the amount of personal use, prosecutors stated.

Although Griner entered a guilty plea, her case could still last for weeks or months.

Griner is expected to appear in court again on July 14 where she will testify on the charges against her.
