An Ohio woman is facing murder charges after she allegedly drowned her grandmother because she couldn’t afford to put her in a nursing home.

According to police reports, 35-year-old Heidi Matheny confessed to killing her grandmother, Alice Matheny, at the Eaton, Ohio home last Tuesday.

Heidi told police she had been informed that Alice needed to be placed in a nursing home for proper medical attention and was worried insurance wouldn’t cover it. She said if it wasn’t covered, she wouldn’t have been able to afford it and she was tired of taking care of her.

According to Heidi, her and her grandmother enjoyed some ice cream together and then she held her grandmother’s head under water in the kitchen sink while the 93-year-old was washing dishes. She waited until the “bubbles stopped” and then, just to be sure she was dead, she filled up her bathtub and held her grandmother under water for 15 minutes.

Immediately after she confirmed her grandmother was dead, Heidi went to the police station where she confessed.

Officers arrived to the home where they found the body of Alice, laying in the bathtub full of water. An autopsy revealed she had suffered a fractured sternum and rib and had multiple bruises on her neck and arms.

Heidi was arrested and charged with murder. Her bail was set at $500,000.
