After his fiancée reported him missing on a trip to perform field research on plants, in Mexico, 31-year-old Gabriel Trujillo was found fatally shot in his SUV.
Trujillo, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, and a botanist pursuing his Ph.D., was shot seven times on June 19, in the state of Sonora. His body was discovered three days after that.
On June 17, Trujillo drove from Arizona to cross the border into Nogales. He disclosed to his fiancée, Roxanne Cruz de Hoyos, that he would be gathering plants and then going back to his Airbnb.
After his fiancée and the Airbnb host hadn’t heard from him after that, Cruz de Hoyos flew to Mexico to assist in looking for Trujillo.
On June 22, his body was found in a SUV, 62 miles away from the Airbnb.
Trujillo’s family had pleaded for him not to go to Sonora as it is a high drug-trafficking area where at least 518 people had been killed through May of this year.
However, Trujillo believed that the trip was essential for his research.
Now, an investigation is continuing, and the U.S. State Department has warned Americans about traveling to Sonora because of “crime and kidnapping.”
