27-year-old Deonta Johnson and 24-year-old Shatia Welch have been charged with neglect and drug charges. This comes after their 16-month-old son was shot by his 5-year-old brother after finding a gun in their residence.
On March 28, Isiah Johnson was shot inside of an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana. Isiah passed away from a gunshot wound to the head, had marijuana in his system, and his brother was found to have cocaine in his system, authorities say.
Deonta Johnson was asleep when the shooting happened, and Welch wasn’t home.
Subsequent to the shooting, fenatanyl pills, marijuana, and paraphernalia was discovered in the residence.
Welch told detectives that she has a gun but usually kept it hidden.
An investigation is on-going.
