Texas Pair Arrested For Operating Fraudulent Funeral Business

Authorities in Houston apprehended a man and a woman for supposedly running a funeral business without a license.

26-year-old Javian Major and 38-year-old Sandy Broussard have been charged with forgery after an investigation that lasted eight months.

The two are said to have stolen thousands of dollars by forging the beneficiaries’ signatures. They did so in order to receive life insurance payments from the deceased, investigators say.

Documents show that Major acted as a funeral director and would request that the victims provide him with money and information about their insurance policies. At least 50 people have reached out to authorities about more suspects who may have taken part in the scheme.

One victim said that Major had taken all of her family’s insurance and turned in a request to get extra money from any victims of the crime. Another person said that Major crushed her son’s body inside the casket. Others stated that the bodies of their family members were missing.

Major was in court this week, and Broussard is set to appear in court on Feb. 9.
