A Texas woman is accused of stealing her cousin’s $1 million winning lottery ticket and trying to pass it off as her own.
The cousin bought a $5 Hold ‘Em Poker lotto scratch off, back in October 2020.
Iris Amador Argueta,32, of Houston was asked by her cousin in New York to cash in the winning ticket so he could remain anonymous.
Argueta then drove to New York to get the ticket, which had to be mailed in due to COVID-19 precautions.
Weeks later, investigators say Argueta showed her cousin paperwork forged to look like it came from the New York State Lottery that said the prize amount was only $20,000.
She then gave him $13,436 in cash and told him the rest she kept for taxes.
The victim contacted police after seeing an official lottery press release that stated Argueta did claim the $1 million lottery ticket.
An investigation was performed and it was determined that Argueta actually received a lump sum prize of $537,440.
Authorities found over $300,000 in stolen funds in Argueta’s bank account.
She was arrested and charged with grand larceny and faces 15 years in prison.
