Outrage sparked at the University of Houston after a racist video involving two students was posted to twitter.

In the video, the students are seen laughing at a historical reference to a public lynching location in Columbus, Tx.

The students, who are UH volleyball players, drove by a large oak tree where two teenage boys were publicly lynched in November 1935.

The recording has no audio, but the caption reads, “This is the hanging tree where we used to hang people.”

According to school’s newspaper, the initial video was recorded by a freshman on Snapchat. It was then posted anonymously on a Twitter account over the weekend.

The post started spreading on social media and sparked outrage amongst many of the student body organizations.

The NAACP wrote a formal letter to the Chancellor with a detailed list, requesting action to be taken. It was signed by over a dozen organizations.

The university released a statement acknowledging the incident and ensuring everyone that they do not condone that behavior. University of Houston reiterated how diverse they are and they celebrate equality.

Both students involved have deleted their Twitter accounts. It’s unclear what other action has been taken regarding this matter.
