TxDot is teaming up with a business to launch a program aimed at improving self-driving trucks on Texas travel roads.

The technology will be implemented on a 21-mile stretch of State Highway 130 from Georgetown to Del Valle.

Before next year comes, special poles will be set up. TxDot and the company Cavnue have called the project “smart freight corridor.”

The infrastructure will have cameras, radar, other communication, hardware, and machine learning where AI can be utilized. At some point, it will help with self-driving freight vehicles and will be beneficial to all drivers.

The technology will be able to read road speeds, hazards, and other road conditions. The data that is received will aid in improving safety measures on the road. This could lead to more driverless trucks at some point.

The “smart freight corridor” is set to fully be implemented by mid-2024.
