72-year-old Sybil Garbow was sentenced to six months in jail after a jury found her guilty of assaulting a white co-worker.
Last month, a judge in Minnesota handed down the six months and five years probation sentence after she was convicted of felony assault. Reports also indicate that Garbow will have to pay a $51,000 fine and surrender to the Anoka County Workhouse Correctional Facility.
On the other hand, as the legal proceedings have ensued, Garbow has said that a big portion of her problem is the treatment she is receiving because of her racial background.
Garbow was employed as a nurse at a mental health facility in Minnesota. She stated that issues between her and a white co-worker, Devlin Stitt, began to get worse in 2021.
Garbow said that she had been using an aerosol spray to disinfect a desk. Because Stitt believed that Garbow was intentionally spraying her, she is said to have pushed Garbow in the chest.
Garbow says that she then attempted to reach for a phone to call for help when Stitt grabbed the phone and struck her hand. Garbow added that she then took the aerosol can and hit Stitt in the head prior to exiting the room.
Although Garbow left the scene, she told other co-workers to get help for Stitt who had suffered a laceration to the head.
Eventually, Garbow left the location and went to a friend’s home. After that, her friend took her to a police station to voluntarily surrender to authorities.
Sounds like self defense to me

Its not self-defense. Pushing someone’s hand away or grabbing something out of someone’s hand doesn’t constitute hitting someone in the head and cutting their head open. You cannot do that under the guise of “equal force”.
When you put your hands on someone and they fight back thats self defense. To top that off, interference when someone is trying to call for help is a crime as well.
Now what would have been the outcome had the coworker pushed that 72 yo lady in the chest and caused her harm? The coworker assulted her first and prevented her from getting help….and she (72 yo) was considerate enough to get to get the injured coworker sone help…..
