Cybersecurity experts say they’ve seen an increase in Android remote access trojan (RAT) infections.
The dangerous malware, BRATA, was first discovered in Brazil but has reached Italy. Hackers are gaining access to people’s banking information from Android users and then stealing money out of their accounts.
Experts say the new malware is hard to identify. Initially, a threat actor sends a text message that has a link to a website, appearing to be a bank. When a person clicks the link, the website will request that they download an anti-spam app.
Once a person gives their information, a fraud operator calls. They will then persuade a person to download a malicious app. Hackers are then able to get into and control their phone.
If a device is infected, hackers can intercept and send text messages, screen record, hide its own icon app, disable Google Play, change settings, and unlock your phone.
Although it hasn’t hit the U.S. yet, Android users should be aware of the threat.
