In an early morning shooting that took place on Monday, a college basketball player died, and eight other people were wounded. The incident occurred at a barbecue gathering, in Harlem, New York.
Around 12:40 a.m., officers answered to calls of a shooting, near FDR Drive, and located multiple people who had been wounded. Other victims went to medical facilities on their own, authorities said.
21-year-old Darius Lee died at the scene. He was from Harlem and went to St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx. Lee was a senior at Houston Baptist University, in Texas, and had been back home for summer break. He was a basketball player for the university, scoring 52 points in one game, last season. Lee was set to graduate in December with a degree in sports management.
As of now, police haven’t given much information about the gathering, a motive, or any suspects. However, they did note that a gun was taken at the scene, and assailants may have been shooting at each other in the possible gang-related incident.
The barbecue seemed to have been organized by a local rapper, Rich Rhymer, in order to put on a community event and was advertised on Instagram.
The two others who were wounded included six males and two females. Their ages ranged from 21 to 42.
An investigation is continuing.
