Recently, DoorDash announced that they would be letting their delivery drivers choose to be paid an hourly minimum wage. This would be another selection they could chose instead of being paid for each delivery.

The new option could be a solution to many delivery drivers’ complaint of not being paid fairly. It could also assist in drivers picking up smaller orders that pay low. Those are orders that most delivery drivers try to stay away from.

Now, drivers will have a choice whether they want to be paid for each order which is typically a couple of dollars in base pay and money for miles driven. On the other hand, they could choose to get a flat hourly rate.

The hourly rate is applicable only during active time. This is the time range between accepting and delivering an order. The time that a driver waits to accept an order isn’t factored in. Additionally, drivers can alternate between the two payment methods, and as always, tips would be in addition to the hourly base rate.

Doordash, which uses independent contractors to deliver food and other items, has noted that the change is a part of marking their 10th anniversary.
