Dwayne Wade Takes To Instagram After Former Wife Files An Objection To Zaya’s Name Change

Last week, ex-NBA player Dwayne Wade’s former wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, filed an objection after he filed a court petition earlier this year to lawfully change his 15-year-old daughter’s name. On Thursday, Wade publicly responded.

Their daughter is transgender and has been using the name Zaya since 2020.

Court documents note that Funches-Wade says that Wade didn’t speak with her before legally changing their daughter’s name to Zaya. It also noted that in April 2022, Wade told her that Zaya would become famous with the name change.

Funches-Wade noted that she is “concerned that our child is being commercialized at a young age.” She is also concerned about “uncontrollable consequences of media exposure.”

As a result of the objection that she filed, Wade took to Instagram.

“Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame,” he posted. “These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.” This came after he saw social media posts, saying that he was coercing Zaya to lawfully change her name.

“…none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag me through the mud. I’m very disappointed that she continuously finds ways of centering herself and HER needs without regard to her children,” he stated.

Wade also said that Zaya has a 4.0 GPA. She is taking honors courses “while navigating all this unsolicited and harmful attention and debates about her gender and sexuality…!”

Wade has accused Funches-Wade of trying to damage him in the past. He was given sole custody of their two children when he was in the NBA.

“The high road has run out of real estate. My lawyer will be in contact. Best of luck to the 14th lawyer as they try to unravel this book of lies that’s been sold to them,” he wrote.
