A New York father is charged with murder after allegedly fatally shooting his 3-week-old daughter with a crossbow. His wife was also injured at the time of the incident.

At around 5 a.m. Monday, Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in Collesville for reports of a woman who’d been shot with a crossbow.

According to investigators, 26-year-old Patrick D. Proefriedt was in an argument with his wife, who was holding their 3-week-old baby, Eleanor, when he aimed and fired his crossbow.

The crossbow struck the baby, entering her little body near the upper torso and exiting through the armpit, before it struck the 31-year-old mother, injuring her.

Police say Proefriedt then retrieved the crossbow and tried to stop his wife from contacting 911 before fleeing the scene in his pickup truck.

Little Eleanor was pronounced deceased at the scene. The mother was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Proefriedt was found hiding in the woods close to their home. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder in the second degree, and criminal contempt in the first degree.

He remains in the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility.
