Former Teacher Awarded $300,000 In BLM Lawsuit

The Duval County School Board has awarded a teacher $300,000 after she was reprimanded for displaying a Black Lives Matter flag in her classroom.

Former educator at Riverside High School(then Lee High)Amy Donofrio, was removed from her teaching position in March after she refused to remove a Black Lives Matter flag from her classroom.

They temporarily assigned her to warehouse operations while they investigated her for several reasons.

The Southern Poverty Law Center represented Donofrio and claim reassigning her was a way of retaliation.
Donofrio filed a lawsuit against the Florida school district claiming they violated her first amendment rights.

The district reached a settlement this month with the former teacher.

In the settlement Donofrio withdrew her discrimination claim as well as dropped her civil action against the school district.
She is also not allowed to seek re employment with the Duval school district.

Donofrio was awarded $300,000 and given $240,000. Her attorney was awarded $60,000 for fees.
