Governor Greg Abbott Eases Truck Inspection Guidelines At Texas/ Mexico Border

Texas will be easing up on truck inspections at all of the border crossings to Mexico, Governor Greg Abbott has stated.

On Friday, prior to meeting with several Mexican Governors, Abbott said that Mexico’s government will be adding more security measures.

A week before the announcement, Abbott had demanded that troopers inspect all commercial truck crossings which is at least four international bridges. He said that the measures were needed because a pandemic-led guideline, Title 42, is going to be lifted in May. This rule permits the U.S. government to send migrants back to their homeland at the border.

Members of the FIEL Houston, and immigration rights advocate group, says that getting rid of Title 42 may not do as much for immigration as some believe.

“If you ask anybody coming across the border, ‘What do you think of Title 42?’ They might just look at you the same way Americans would look at you like a deer in headlights,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

In November, Abbott will be running for governor again. On Friday, Beto O’Rourke stated that Abbott’s move was “completely unnecessary,” adding that he is trying to get attention and did nothing to make security better.
