A 12-year-old girl is alive after playing dead after her father attacked her. He had already fatally stabbed her 3-year-old sister.
Juan Bravo-Torres, 39, has been identified as the father. On Thursday morning, in Longwood, Florida, he is said to have attacked his daughters. He has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and attempted murder.
Reports indicate that the 12-year-old was sleep when she woke up to her dad going for her throat. She believed that her father was trying to get her necklace, but he took ahold and cut her neck.
As the father went to retrieve another knife, the 12-year-old tried to leave out of the bedroom. That’s when she discovered her 3-year-old sister dead in the hallway.
Court documents note that when Bravo-Torres came back, the girl “fought back” and then “acted dead.” She wanted her father to stop the attack.
Authorities say that the father then pulled both girls into a restroom. He then started to cut his own wrists, and his daughter said that it sounded like he was attempting to cut his own throat.
The girl told police that she remained laying down until she believed that her father had blacked out. She then grabbed the knife that he used and walked almost a mile to her mother’s job at McDonald’s.
After disclosing to her mother what had occurred, the police were contacted.
When authorities got to the scene at 5:40 a.m., they discovered Bravo-Torres seriously wounded. The 3-year-old was dead.
The 12-year-old girl and her father were transported to a hospital. There, Bravo-Torres was placed in the custody of law enforcement.
A motive for the attack is unclear.
