Man Fatally Shoots Doctor In Suspected Premeditated Murder

A Memphis man was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault after he shot and killed a surgeon in an exam room.

29-year-old Larry Pickens was arrested shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday near the Campbell Clinic entrance.

According to police, Pickens came into the clinic and signed in as a patient, waiting a few hours to be seen.

When it was his turn to be seen, Dr. Benjamin Mauck, an elbow, hand, and wrist surgeon specialist, was in the exam room with Pickens.

Pickens allegedly pulled a handgun from his possession and targeted the Doctor, fatally shooting him. He then attempted to flee the scene, however, he was located within 5 minutes, near the entrance of the clinic.

He remains in custody with a $1.2 million bond.
