A Denton County jury sentenced a man to life plus 35 years behind bars for shooting an officer twice in 2019 and endangering another.

The jury found Antwon Pinkston guilty on two counts of assault on a peace officer in March. After a week delay in the sentencing phase of the trial, the jury came to an agreement on Monday.

Prosecutors say Pinkston opened fire on Denton Police Officer Urbano Rodriguez Jr. during a traffic stop on Oct. 29, 2019.

Rodriguez was hit twice, once in the head and once in the leg. As a result, he suffered serious and long lasting injuries.

Pinkston was sentenced to life behind bars for shooting Rodriguez and an additional 35 years in prison for endangering another officer, Randy Cole, during the same traffic stop.

After 11 days of testimony, the jury heard the closing arguments and then deliberated on their verdict.

When the guilty verdict was announced, Pinkston showed no emotion.
