25-year-old Jaylen Johnson, of Olivette, Missouri, has been charged with fatally shooting his mother as she attempted to enter the back door of their residence.

Johnson’s lawyer, William Goldstein, reported that Johnson thought that his mother was a burglar when she attempted to enter the residence in the St. Louis suburb, close to 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Authorities say that 56-year-old Monica McNichols-Johnson was declared deceased at the residence although Johnson’s girlfriend attempted to assist her after she was shot.

25-year-old Johnson swiftly called authorities after he shot his mother, and he has been distressed the entire time, his lawyer added.

“He hasn’t stopped crying,” Goldstein stated.

Johnson has now been charged with manslaughter and armed criminal action. His bail was placed at $100,000.

Johnson is an ex-college football player who works and has no criminal record. Goldstein stated that Johnson had a gun for protection after having been robbed at gunpoint previously.
