Parents, 24-year-old Takesha Williams and 25-year-old Efrem Allen Jr., were charged with manslaughter for supposedly neglecting their 3-year-old child, causing him to rot to death.
The child, who had been comatose, died last month, at their residence in Bartow, Florida.
When first responders arrived to the home, they found the child with open wounds and injuries. Reports indicate that he had been rotting in bed. The boy’s rectum was missing, and his colon, intestines, and spinal column were easily visible.
At first, the parents were charged with neglecting a child, but that later changed to manslaughter.
The unidentified child had been in a comatose condition since 2020. When he was 10-months-old, he fell into a pool and nearly drowned. Physicians suggested that he be taken off of life support, but the parents didn’t agree. They transported the child home on a ventilator and with a tube in his stomach.
At the beginning, the child was receiving financial help from the government and home healthcare services. However, a different home healthcare provider was used later on, and the aides were no longer allowed in the home as of October.
The parents disclosed that they last observed the child alive on May 11. The mother called first responders, on May 12, regarding the child’s pulsometer but never stated that there was an emergency.
The child was taken to a medical facility where he was declared deceased. Not only did he have several wounds, but he was also suffering from pneumonia and sepsis.
The parents told police that they hadn’t contacted anyone for help because they didn’t want to lose their other two children. However, those children are now in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Williams and Allen have claimed they aren’t guilty of any wrongdoings and are being held on a $100,000 bond each.
