Prison Fire In Tangerang Jail Kills 41 Inmates

At least 41 inmates were killed and 8 injured during a fire in Block C of Tangerang Prison, in Banten province Wednesday morning.
The fire took place in Block C of the overcrowded jail around 3:45am where nearly 122 inmates were being held.
Reportedly many of the doors would not open due to the fire and left several inmates trapped.
Jakarta police spokesman Yusri Yunus said firefighters battled the flames for two hours before putting the fire out.
According to reports 8 of the 70 people injured were in critical condition with over 90% of their bodies burned.
In a statement Yasonna Laoly said that the prison’s electrical wiring had not been updated since 1972. The jail had a 600 person capacity but it housed 2,000 inmates.
Wednesday’s fire is the deadliest to hit Indonesia since 47 people died in a fireworks factory disaster in 2017.
