After Bruce Arians’ abrupt resignation as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, another Black head coach is taking over.

Todd Bowles, a veteran coach, will now lead the team.

On Wednesday, Arians announced to his coaching staff and players that he will become the team’s senior football consultant. With this change, Bowles, who was the defensive coordinator, will take his spot.

“I’m appreciative of the Glazer family and Jason Licht for having faith in me to take on this role. And to Coach Arians, for his support and guidance over the past four decades,” Bowles wrote in a statement.

Bowles was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2015. He coached them to a 10-6 record during his first season. When he left the team in 2018, their record was 24-40. He has been with the Buccaneers since 2019.

Recent reports indicate that the change may have come following the Miami Dolphins head coach’s discrimination lawsuit. After it was filed by Brian Flores, their coach, the NFL created a hiring committee to oversee the hiring procedures.
