Kataluna Enriquez has been crowned Miss Nevada. She is the first transgender to capture the title. Later this year, she will participate in the Miss USA pageant.

The 27 year-old competed against 21 other participants during the pageant in Las Vegas on Sunday. She had won the Miss Silver State USA pageant in March.

“My community, you are always in my heart. My win is our win. We just made history. Happy pride,” she declared on Sunday.

Enriquez creates and puts together her own gowns and pageant dresses. She uses her social media to share her life experiences and stand up for the rights of the LBGTQ community.

She was asked by a judge about her journey being a transgender pageant contestant. “..as a transgender woman of color and a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, I am everything that is underrepresented in this country. Our voices matter…”
