U.S. State Denies 54 Math Books, Stating Some Contain Critical Race Theory

54 mathematics textbooks for K-12 curriculum have been denied by the Florida education department. The state cited extending the inclusion of critical race theory to Common Core learning concept as the reason.

The denied books are 41% of the 132 books that were reviewed, the department stated.

It was noted that 28 of the books were denied because they “incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including [critical race theory].”

Scholars have defined critical race theory as a study of racism and its affect through legal, housing, and education systems. But, it is usually not taught in K-12.

12 of the books weren’t approved because they didn’t meet Florida’s benchmark standards. Then, 14 books were denied because they entailed prohibited subjects and didn’t meet curriculum standards.

Additionally, 70% of the math materials for K-5 were denied. Twenty percent of the resources for 6-8 were rejected. Then, 35% of materials for grades 9-12 were denied.

In 2020, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis got rid of Common Core concepts,  which are national academic standards in reading and math, from the state’s curriculum.

In 2021, DeSantis prohibited the teaching of critical race theory. He has said that it is “the theory that racism is not merely the product of prejudice, but that racism is embedded in American society and its legal systems in order to uphold the supremacy of a white person.”

The names of the rejected books were released.
