On Friday, the U.S. Secret Service released a statement, noting that a Home Depot employee had been arrested. He is accused of switching out $387,500 of the store’s cash with counterfeit bills.
Adrian Jean Pineda was employed as a vault associate at a Home Depot in Tempe, Arizona. His job was to get cash ready to be deposited in the bank. This involved counting the money and securing the cash bags for transfer and deposit to a Wells Fargo bank.
However, documents state that Pineda was retrieving money from the deposits. He would then replace it with counterfeit money as he worked his shifts.
The Home Depot store is said to have lost $387,500 between January 2018 and January 2022.
During Pineda’s apprehension, $5,000 in counterfeit bills and $5,300 in real cash were found. While looking through Pineda’s residence, authorities also located $22,000 of real cash.
Pineda has been charged with uttering counterfeit currency and could face 20 years in prison.
