Jay-Z and others call for rap lyrics to no longer be used as criminal evidence.

Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland and Meek Mill are just a few of the artists who are calling for an end to the use of rap lyrics as evidence in court.

Hip-hop has always been known to contain lyrics that can be vicious and violent.

Jay-Z is taking the lead and helping other music stars to also argue for a change in New York law. Meek Mill, Fat Joe, Robin Thicke, Yo Gotti, Kelly Rowland signed a letter that Jay-Z’s lawyer drafted to make their case for New York state lawmakers to back the proposed change.

The A-list signers say the law would bolster artists’ freedom of expression.

State Senators created The Rap Music on Trial legislation, which was passed back in November. It seeks to prevent prosecutors from citing lyrics, except in cases of “clear and convincing proof” that the words are linked to a crime.
