Dan Marburger, a central Iowa high school principal who was critically wounded in a shooting that killed a middle school student earlier this month, has died.

Reports indicate that Marburger passed away on Sunday morning. He had been in the hospital for 10 days after shielding staff and students as the Jan. 4 incident had occurred.

Marburger had been the head principal at Perry High School since 1995.

His actions during the shooting have been called heroic as he placed himself in harm’s way to ensure students’ survival.

Two other adults and four students were wounded in the shooting. Ahmir Joliff, 11, died after being shot three times by the perpetrator, Dylan Butler.

Butler died of a self-inflicted gunshot injury, the Iowa State Medical Examiner noted.
