Prosecutor Seeks Death Penalty In Murder Of Police Officer Who Begged For Her Life

An Illinois prosecutor is seeking the death penalty for two people charged in the shooting of two police officers in a hotel room. The prosecutors says he’ll ask the Justice Department to review the case and pursue federal death penalty charges.

Illinois is not a death penalty state, but the U.S. Attorney General can authorize the filing of a petition to seek the death penalty in a federal murder case.

Officer Tyler Bailey and Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic were responding to a call at a Comfort Inn on December 29. The officers were knocking on one of the doors when Darius Sullivan, 25, shot Officer Bailey.

Sullivan allegedly used Sgt. Rittmanic’s service weapon and fired two shots, striking her in the throat and neck as he chased her down the hall. The incident was captured on Rittmanic’s body cam.

Xandria Harris, 26, Sullivan’s girlfriend, assisted in disarming Sgt. Rittmanic for Sullivan to shoot her. Sgt. Rittmanic was pleading with them saying, “you don’t have to do this, please just go. Please don’t. Please don’t.” Sgt. Rittmanic succumbed to her injuries while Officer Bailey is still recovering.

After the shooting, Sullivan and Harris fled. Harris’ children were in the room at the time of the shootings.
