Business woman and philanthropist Ronda Stryker, and her husband, William Johnston, chairman of Greenleaf Trust, has gifted Spelman College with a single donation of $100 million.
This the largest donation given to an Historically Black College and University.

Since 1997, Stryker has been a Spelman College Trustee. She has worked to elevate women through higher education and more opportunities for additional marginalized groups.

The $100 million was given as Spelman College celebrates 100 years. The college stated that the gift is an essential step in the institution’s goal to be need-blind and assisting and attracting the best and brightest students by getting rid of possible barriers to admission.

The school noted that $75 million of the funds will go directly towards endowed scholarships for future students. The other $25 million will be used to create an academic focus on public policy and democracy, improve student housing, and money for important strategic needs.

Reports indicate that the annual cost to attend Spelman College is $29,102.

In 2018, Stryker and Johnston also donated $30 million. This was to assist in building the Center for Innovation & the Arts at the school.

Spelman is the country’s oldest historically Black college for women. It is mostly a residential, private, liberal arts college.
