Woman Naturally Cured Of HIV, Scientists Say

An unknown woman in Argentina is the second person known to be cured of HIV without medical assistance.

In 2013, the woman, 30, was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus. Scientists have analyzed her DNA attempting to find evidence of the virus since 2017. After “sequencing billions of cells,” scientist documented that the woman is HIV-negative.

Many people with the virus can manage it as long as it is under control. However, they usually need continuing antiretroviral therapy to stop the virus from replicating.

Altogether, four people are said to have been cured of the virus. Two of them, “the Berlin Patient” and the “London Patient” were found to be HIV- negative after stem-cell transplants.

Loreen Willenberg, the “San Francisco Patient” and the unknown woman from Argentina, the “Esperanza Patient,” are individuals whose immune systems naturally suppressed the virus.

“Just thinking that my condition might help achieve a cure for this virus makes me feel great responsibility and commitment to make this a reality,” the unknown patient stated.
